I named this piece Hello Goodbye because that’s pretty much how fast the tulips seem to bloom and disappear here in Holland — one minute it's a flower party, the next it’s over. This painting is layered with bold, joyful color and loose, expressive brushwork. It’s about those fleeting moments — like spring flowers and, honestly, childhood too. I try to paint with the curiosity of an explorer, chasing beauty before it slips away.

This piece is a love letter to springtime in Savannah, where I once lived and where the city itself seemed to bloom with life. White azaleas lined the streets in full, fragrant glory, and the golden forsythia danced in the breeze like sunlight made visible. The air was alive with the sound of people singing in the city squares, the sweet scent of warm pralines wafting from the riverfront, mingling with the salty, humid breeze. When I moved to Holland in 2014, I was delighted to find azaleas blooming here too — a gentle reminder that beauty finds its way back to us. This piece is layered in memory, music, and the floral joy of spring.

Tulip Time 2025 Entry: A Love Letter in Layers
This vibrant, playful painting was one of three pieces I created for the 2025 Tulip Time Poster Competition — and I was honored to have it selected among the Top 20 finalists, alongside another piece titled “Sweet Grass and Tulip Fields,” which found a new home during this year’s festival.
This particular work holds a special place in my heart. Woven into its bright layers of spring florals are echoes of The Wizard of Oz — a subtle nod to L. Frank Baum, who, like many enchanted travelers, spent his summers along the Michigan lakeshore near Lake Macatawa. It’s said this charming corner of Holland left an impression on him, and I wanted to capture that same sense of wonder and affection for this town in my own way.
It’s a celebration of place, memory, and magic — and above all, a joyful tribute to Holland in full bloom.
