It may look like play, but there are long days, working hands, and a curious old mind behind her. I love things that have so much more to offer when you take a closer look. Inspired by the sunflowers and pansies still showing off in my September garden, A State of Play is where gold struts in and violet swirls like it owns the place. She didn't come to be polite. She came to play.
36×24 inch Mixed Media on canvas
This is the first painting I made in early 2026 and it was one of my favorites because there was so much struggle in the sticky middle.

Pansy Party was selected for the 2026 West Michigan Area Show at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, a juried regional exhibition on view May 29–September 27, 2026.
When I paint, I play and then see what emerges. Its like going on a road trip with your best friend and with no destination in mind. Just a bunch of great snacks and good music. These flowers are loose and fun with a lovely sap green and violet - one of my favorite color combos!

Catch Me at the 2026 West Michigan Area Show!
I’m honored to have a piece accepted into the 2026 West Michigan Area Show at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. This juried exhibition features artists from 14 counties across West Michigan and showcases a wide range of work, from painting and photography to sculpture and mixed media.
The exhibition runs from May 29 through September 27, 2026, and includes over $6,000 in awards celebrating artistic excellence in the region.
Being included in this show is incredibly meaningful to me, as it connects my work with a broader creative community and honors the ongoing journey of growth, expression, and healing that fuels my art.
My name is Erin Mullis…
"My paintings are stitched together from fragments of memory—youthful summers on Northern Lake Michigan, sunsets on the beach, long road trips, my favorite flowers, old homes, old songs. They are cherry-picked memories from a time I can never return to, from a person I no longer am, and from a world my children will never know.
Even when I paint still life’s or landscapes through abstraction, I gather only the best pieces, the golden fragments, and bring them together. Perhaps that is why my paintings feel joyful—because they are built from the best parts of the best parts of living."

This has been my ArtPrize home since 2024, and I’m proud to have my work in this small gift shop in the heart of Grand Rapids. You’ll find my prints, cards, and original pieces alongside a thoughtfully curated selection of local artists.
My little space at The Crow’s Hold Market opens May 16th, and it truly feels like a piece of my heart brought to life. Inside you’ll find original paintings, fine art prints, and cards, each one created with intention, layered emotion, and a deep love for the process. While the booth is small, I may also have larger works displayed throughout the building. The market is home to many other talented artisans as well, so if you love discovering unique, handmade treasures, you’ll find plenty to explore.
