"Rain" ArtPrize 2026 - The Secret Garden Series

$4,320.00

Mixed media on canvas

When I was a little girl, I loved swimming in the rain when the lake was warm. There is something about being in the water during a downpour that feels both terrifying and exhilarating.

I love the way everything seems to come back to life afterward, when the leaves shake off the rain and begin to dry in the sunlight. I think that is what this piece feels like to me: the wildness of the storm, followed by that quiet, renewed feeling when the sun comes back out.

This series, created for ArtPrize 2026, explores the way color can evoke feeling before we have words for it. They were all created as an invitation to pause, look closely, and experience the painting in your own way. To feel the space within you and see what resonates.

I intentionally painted the room these hung in, a deep blue as a backdrop to the three works in a way that both harmonizes with and elevates the work. I have grown so tired of institutionalized white spaces that don’t let the work breathe or harmonize with the environment around it.

In this way, if you had a chance to see it at ArtPrize next to Periwinkle Fog, I asked viewers a simple question.

The question isn’t, What does this color mean?

But rather, What does this color awaken in you?

Because, as the saying goes, we do not see things as they are; we see things as we are.
